Navigating two athletics as well as a College and Career Readiness class, Coach Lewis Brown hopes to open up new possibilities for students at the high school.
Having graduated from Stone High School followed by obtaining two degrees, Brown is not lacking in the qualifications to teach such a class. Preparing kids for college and beyond is the goal of the CCR course, and Brown intends to make it as impactful as possible.
“It chose me,” Brown said. “That’s all there is to it.”
Despite being qualified for many other subjects, Brown chose to stick with a course that he feels is able to have a lasting effect on the students that take it. The subject itself is rather unique compared to other classes, as it is based on the more practical side of things, rather than formulas and rules.
“You get to incorporate real-world scenarios.” Brown said. “You’ve got to be able to convert the book into real life.”
Educating kids on the ways of adulthood is not the only thing Brown does, he also intends to make a difference for both his track and football players as well. He has high expectations for his players in both areas and is confident for the upcoming seasons.
Brown finds that football teaches the players to work as a team unit, all progressing towards a common goal. He hopes this can be useful in the real world as well, as many aspects of life require cooperation. Track, however, balances things out as it brings out a more competitive side to things, revolving around one player and their personal ability to get things done. He hopes when all is said and done in both areas to bring a district championship back to the school.
“I hope to impact my players by teaching them to stay the course through adversity,” Brown said.
Whether it be at the track, field or classroom, Brown hopes to make a difference in his students’ lives.
