Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a computer system that acts and thinks like a human.
George County High School is starting to see the pros and cons of potentially incorporating AI into our daily school lives.
Most students are already used to and aware of AI. Freshman Morgan Holland says she uses the AI that is provided by the app SnapChat.
“If anything we are going to have to eventually embrace it in some way, and use it more as a tool rather than a hindrance to their education,” English II Theresa VanVleck said.
In an article by Lauren Coffey, a reporter for InsideHigherEd, she did a poll in spring 2023 with faculty members and how they felt with the incorporation of AI with half of them saying it was negative. However, the poll was taken again in fall 2023 with the percent dropping down to 39 percent. This experiment shows that more and more faculty members are opening up to the idea of using AI as a learning tool.
“It’s easily tempting for students to rely on it,” VanVleck said.
One problem with the use of Ai in class is how students can overly rely on it to do their assignments.
“Just being an active teacher and catching it immediately, us staying on top of our duties as teachers,” VanVleck said as a way to prevent negative use with AI.
Some other negative things that come along with AI is bias, no privacy, and some think the concept can be unethical.
Overall, AI is a new concept for most, but might soon be incorporated into our daily lives at school.
