Second semester is understandably stressful for many students. Whether it be new classes or anticipating summer break, students may begin to fall into a slump.
However some students resist that slump and use motivations to push through the semester.
Freshman Kylie Hicks motivation comes from continuing to keep up her grades and GPA.
“I feel like I might be more motivated just to keep up the grades I have and to keep my GPA as high as it is,” Hicks said.
Although she seems to have a passion for keeping up her grades, she looks forward to being done with the second semester and getting out for summer. This also helps her through the school day.
Going back to her grades, Hicks’ main goal this semester is to keep her GPA up to help with scholarships and college.
All this considering, the second semester is still a bit more difficult than last.
“I have to strive to be more motivated this semester, taking higher classes than I should be,”she said. “I have algebra this semester so that’s harder, and I also have zoology and that takes more concentration.”
Junior Hunter Glaskox is another student doing fairly well so far this semester. He states that he doesn’t feel less motivated after coming back from Christmas break and is focusing on making good grades, specifically 90s and above.
“I’m a hardworking individual,”Glaskox said.
He also states that the second semester feels shorter than the last, mostly because this time around his classes are better.
Senior Ethan Hodges also states that he plans on making all A’s this semester and keeping up a good GPA.
He’s starting his last semester of high school off by being in his favorite subject, math, and is looking forward to graduation.
With the second semester just starting out, Hodges does not feel like it’s been long enough to feel a burnout or any effects in his grades.
When it comes to making it through the school day, his friends play a big role in this, stating that they make him laugh.
Guidance Counselor Allison Howard gives her input to prevent students from going into a slump.
“One thing they can do is make sure that they’re resting well, make sure they’re getting a good amount of sleep at night,” Howard said.
“I think also to make sure that they are not procrastinating and putting things off to the last minute because that can lead you to more stress and anxiety, which worsens the feeling of burnout,” she said.
She also strongly suggests taking one day at a time, whether that be one subject or one assignment, along with having an activity that can take away your stress, such as exercising, music, journaling and so on.
“Just try to have smaller goals that they know they can accomplish,” Howard said.
She states that when it comes to senior slumps, many come asking to be switched into easier classes that do not require a lot of work to be done.
“That’s really a lot of seniors first resorts is to ‘Well, I’ll just get out of that science class and get put into PE’,” she said.
While many students fall into this terrible slump, students may find that having something to look forward to this semester may help get through these last few months , for example Kylie Hicks is looking forward to the summer.
“I’d say I’m looking forward to having the breaks and getting out for summer,” Hicks said.
