After working at Mary G. Montgomery High School for over 20 years, English teacher Christina Skelton has decided to spend her 26th year teaching at GCHS.
Skelton started out at the University of South Alabama majoring to be an accountant, but after deciding that accounting was not for her and talking to her mom, she switched her major to education.
Since becoming a teacher, Skelton has taught English 9th-12th, public speaking, broadcast journalism and study of film and debate. Out of these subjects, Skelton has enjoyed teaching broadcast journalism the most.
Since moving to the high school, Skelton has noticed that the students and teachers are nice, helpful and respectful. She has also found it nice to see familiar faces of people she has worked with, including Principal Chip Menton, who was her principal at MGM.
Some of the goals Skelton strives to reach this school year is encouraging students to strive to do their best. One tip she would like to give to her students is to always strive to move forward.
“Life is like a car. You need to focus on what you see in the windshield, not what’s nagging at you in the rearview mirror,” Skelton said.
In her free time, Skelton enjoys fishing and taking trips to Dauphin Island in the boat that her husband built. She also enjoys watching the sunrise and sunset while she is out on the water.
Skelton is excited to be teaching at the high school after her retirement from Mobile County Public Schools.
