Balance is something many try to achieve including the students of George County High School. Some students acquire a job when they enter into high school and for some it can be an opportunity or a problem.
After-school jobs and even weekend jobs have a way of giving students a glimpse into the working field they will become more acquainted with when they graduate. However, working with so many responsibilities and school work can cause a problem with students in regards to balancing jobs and school work.
Senior Brylee Pitts works at Sonic Drive-in as an after school job that she acquired with the help from her sister. Another student Junior Alexis Muun works at Hardee’s fast food restaurant. Even though these two students have different jobs they still work a certain amount of time to acquire the work experience and the money they may need for the future.
Pitts expresses that she works six to seven hours and seems unfair for a student like her to be working those hours because of the fact that she gets home late and it might cause her to lose time to study for her classes.
“I would rather work less since it causes me to come home late.” Pitts says.
Munn states that she works five hours, and like Pitts, she thinks that is unfair for a student to be working that long.
Both girls work until 11p.m. to midnight in regards to their respective hours. Pitts dislikes the fact of having to return home late, tired from a long work day and be expected to perform well in school.
However, Munn has grown used to the idea of working late nights and is not bothered by the hours she is required to work.
Both girls express that even with the hours they are required to work they manage to keep decent grades.
Even though both girls work at their respective times. Pitts works to require the work experience she may need when it comes to acquiring a future job, while Munn works to make the money she might need to pay for her own necessities.
Even though working requires long hours and a busy workday, it teaches young people how to work and how to make, manage and spend money. However, late hours for students can affect how they perform in school or can alter how they tackle workloads.
