As Halloween creeps around the corner for George County, the whispers of ghostly encounters fill the air.
One of the spooky encounters begins with freshman James Clark as he shares his story. Clark tells about how the story begins in a local trailer park where an abandoned house serves as a hideout for the boy. Rumors spread about three people being killed in that very home that Clark plays in. He expresses the strange occurrences as lights flickering along with other weird things.
“I would walk into the house for a minute, and the lights would flicker on and off once or twice and then it would get cold when it was 80 degrees outside.” Clark said as he recalls his encounter with the home.
Clark states that the occurrences in the hideout strongly affected his beliefs of the supernatural. He tells how the encounter was a little scary at first, but he would be willing to share his story for more to hear mainly to his future generation.
Another local story told by computer science instructor Christopher Beall, a sense of spookiness and sentiment is woven. Beall tells about a beloved dog he used to have for seventeen years that passed away. Two weeks later, when he and his fiance were getting ready for bed they could hear the sound of a dog walking down the hall along with the sound of a dog collar, but when they went to check the hal,l nothing was there.
“I always thought that it was my dog coming to say goodbye,” Beall said.
Beall also expresses how he always believed in the supernatural before this experience and that night only confirmed it. He believed that his beloved pet was coming to say one last goodbye, which put his mind at ease when dealing with the passing. He tells how he would love to share the story with people who are dealing with the loss of a loved one or a beloved pet. He wants people to believe that the ones that we loved and have passed will come to grace their family or friends with one last goodbye.
Ghost stories or haunting stories have always played a role in history, whether it be to entertain or to ward off curious children from dangers. Some stories hold a special place in a person’s heart, as if they serve as a reminder of a special someone who might’ve shared or carried a sense of nostalgia.
Ghost stories, told in various ways by various people, tend to carry the tradition of Halloween as their whispers echo into the future years.
