Algebra l teacher Sharon Robinson will finish her 26th year of teaching at George County. After teaching for 25 years in Alabama and retiring, she decided to cross the state line and come to Mississippi.
Robinson graduated college from the University of South Alabama. She has a master’s in elementary education. She has taught at Semmes Middle School and Blunt High School. Between them she said that George County has been her favorite to teach at.
“I appreciate the manners of the student. . . the behavior is fantastic and y’all have no idea how much I appreciate that,” Robinson said.
Robinson taught elementary school for a few years at Semmes where she taught all subjects. She taught algebra and geometry in the same year when she was swapping back and forth between ninth and tenth grade. Her favorite subject is algebra.
“I have taught fourth, fifth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth grade,” Robinson said.
Although Robinson hates frogs, her biggest fear within school would be to have a kid that she did not reach and affect.
“We put in all this time and effort you know as a class and there are still people that I don’t reach,” Robinson said.
What convinced Robinson to look at teaching as a career was when she often found herself helping people with math and helping teachers teach their students.
“I was helping the teachers so that they could learn how to do the material so that they could turn around and teach it,” Robinson said.
She started working with a few students and it made a difference, so she decided to try it out.
Robinson’s interests are her family and her escape room that she owns in Foley, Alabama. One thing that is interesting is that she has a set of twin daughters. Her favorite movie is “Ever After” starring Drew Barrymore.
Robinson’s favorite thing to teach in her class is factoring.
“I like the way it all works out in the end. I like the way it starts off as an ugly messy problem, but in the end it turns out very nice and tidy,” Robinson said.
Robinson thinks that her students would say that she is very passionate about the subject.
“I’m actually excited about the subject matter that I teach, and I try to instill the same enthusiasm. . . I really like teaching Algebra,” Robinson said.
Robinson is happy to end her year at George County.
