George County High School has“added” Danae Callahan as a new addition to the math department, and she is ready to make math more than just numbers.
Callahan is starting off her journey at the high school by teaching honors geometry first and fourth block and Algebra I her second block. Along with these subjects she has previously taught seventh and eighth grade math for three years at George County Middle School and eighth grade math at Pearl River Central Middle School for two years.
Callahan received her associates degree at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and her bachelor’s at the University of Southern Mississippi. She has been teaching for a total of five and a half years.
Prior to living in Mississippi, she lived in Utah where her dad served in the military. While working as a barista at Starbucks at the military base, she met her husband.
“He would come in everyday and try anything I gave him, then one day he came in and asked me on a date. He looked fun so I said yes,” Callahan said.
Now Callahan gets to go home to her four kids. She enjoys taking her kids to cheer and football to support them. Some of her other hobbies include reading, video games and crocheting.
Callahan shared that when she was in middle school she would help everyone in her class with math.
“One day I sat by myself and then I realized that I’m better off helping them. That’s why I became a teacher,” Callahan said.
Callahan enjoys teaching math because she can help people on a subject they normally think they cannot do. She is always willing to help because she hates to see a child struggling.
“Please come to tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Use your resources,” Callahan said.
While moving to a different district, she found her way back to this one, and she loves it.
“This is the absolute best school district I will ever work for,” Callahan said.
