Born and raised in George County, math teacher Makayla Smith grew up with a love of math.

Smith became a math teacher to encourage students and help them not be as anxious when not understanding the math concepts.

Smith attended Rocky Creek Elementary and Graduated from George County High School in 2012. She also attended University of Southern Mississippi and Jones Junior College and began teaching in January 2017. Smith started out teaching at George County Middle School, then began teaching at the high school this year. One of the main reasons Smith became a math teacher was

“So I can help my students be more comfortable and not as anxious or worrisome with math.”

Like all teachers, Smith has pet peeves, but one of her biggest is cell phones in class. She believes it is very disrespectful. Smith came back to teach at the same high school she graduated from because she said, “It feels like home.”
